0:00 If you charge sales tax, Check Cherry can add it to every booking for you, so you're not doing the math by hand. Let's set it up. Go to manage, then business settings and click the taxes tab. Here we pick how taxes get calculated. We can use automatic calculation through TaxJar, a flat rate, or state-specific rates. Save your settings, now click try it out. Enter a venue address and check Cherry shows exactly which tag zone and rate will apply. That's worth doing before your next booking comes in.
0:33 Enter a venue address and check Cherry shows exactly which tax zone and rate will apply. That's worth doing before your next booking comes in. One thing to know about zones, each booking gets one tag zone matched to the venue address. Zones don't stack, and the invoice shows one sales tax line. So if your area has a 7% tax rate and a 5% local tax, don't make two zones. Use automatic calculation or make one zone set to the combined 12%. Next is for your packages. Once tax is set up, every package is taxable by default.
1:09 If a package shouldn't be taxed, open its settings and turn off the taxable toggle. You won't see that toggle until you've created a tax configuration, so set up tax first. Add-ons have their own tax setting too, so check those as well. Some clients don't pay sales tax like nonprofits and government agencies. Go to user accounts and find the client. Click the arrow next to show user and choose edit user. Scroll down to sales tax, set tax exempt to yes, and add the reason for your records. Click save.
1:43 If it's just one booking that shouldn't be taxed, you don't need to change the client's account. Open the booking, click the tax line on the invoice, and toggle it off. You can also edit the tax rate right on the invoice if the default rate is wrong for that location. When it's time to file, go to reporting and open the sales tax report. Click customize, set your date range, and run the report. You get a breakdown of what you collected by tax zone, and you can download it as a CSV for your filing. If you sync with QuickBooks Online, turn on sales tax inside QuickBooks too, so the tax amounts come through correctly. And that's it.
